AI is here to say – is it going to change things for writers?

Posted on 2nd March, 2024

Every day someone on FB or elsewhere posts a doom and gloom post about AI. Articles abound saying it will ruin things for writers. That soon there will be thousands of appalling books published and our income will plummet.

Do you remember a few years ago the ‘click farms’ in China and other places caused the same panic?  Unscrupulous companies put up books with almost no content and when an unsuspecting reader clicked on it a payment from KDP wa made even though there was no real book there. Also books were copied/cobbled together and put up in their hundreds for the same reason. This lasted for while and then Amazon stopped it. It made zero difference to my royalties.

I think AI will be useful for writer for writing blurbs, a synopsis, blog posts etc but not for writing an actual book. Of course there will be lots of manufactured books initially but readers aren’t stupid, they will recognise the difference and after a while these AI books will vanish in the same way the others did.

AI can replicate a writing style quite well, can produce decent essays for students to cheat with,  but so far any attempts at creative writing have been dismal. Maybe in ten years it will be different but at the moment I think we writers and our royalties are safe.

What do you think? Am I under estimating the danger of AI?

My very talented great niece drew this  of Loki with pencils. It’s so lifelike. I love it.

I now have box sets!!

best wishes
