How many books a year is too many?

Posted on 1st June, 2023

I write four books a year for the fabulous Boldwood – I used to write three for them and three or four daughter Regency to indie publish. I stopped writing Regency a year ago as I make so much more from the royalties of my Boldwood books than I was doing for my Regency stories.

I’ve now sold fourteen backlist titles to Boldwood which will be brought out from September this year until August next year – don’t forget there will also be my regular four new titles during this time. That will mean that there will be nineteen books published by Boldwood in those twelve months. My publisher seems very happy about this but I’m not so sure as I think half a dozen books from one writer a year is more than sufficient to satisfy the needs of my regular readers.

Anyway – the proof is in the pudding as they say. This time next year I’ll be in a better position to comment about the situation. I’m not complaining – I’m absolutely thrilled that Boldwood are prepared to take the chance on so many of my indie books. The first of these comes out September and has been retitled – The Land Girl’s Secret – which I really like.

I know that Nora Roberts publishes ten books a year and her massive fan base gobble them up with enthusiasm. Let’s hope that the thousands of new readers I’ve gained from being with both Head Zeus and Boldwood are equally enthusiastic about these older books.

Today the sixth book in my Goodwill House series has been published. Wedding Bells at Goodwill House is my favourite in the series so far, although the final book, coming out at the end of August, A Christmas Baby at Goodwill House is a close second. Here’s the link if you want to download the new book.

Let’s hope so many books doesn’t prove to overload the market in my case. What do you think?
