How much promotion is too much?
Posted on 2nd December, 2025
This month I’d like to ask you a question – do the constant promotional adverts, videos and so on that you encounter on your social media encourage you to buy the book or do they irritate you? I scroll past any video of a writer opening a box of books, talking heads are something I really don’t like, but that’s a personal thing. However, I think I’ve discovered several writers from seeing their ads on Facebook – the beauty of Kindle Unlimited is that you can download a title and if you don’t like it return it. You pay a monthly subscription and can have up to 16 books borrowed at any one time.
I’ve seen several posts from friends and other people I know complaining that all they see now are adverts of various kinds and very few personal posts from the people they follow. I agree – 60% of what I see are sponsored reels and adverts. If I’m not in a rush then I always go through the long performance and block most of them.
I do like seeing the covers of new books that come out from people that I follow but there are some writers who seem to put up a dozen promotional things a day and that’s just too much. As I’m just about to dip my toe back into indie publishing I’ll have to get up to speed with what’s needed in the way of promotion. I got a very good friend who is a hybrid writer – I know that she puts up her R
egencies/Victorian titles with no fanfare and no promotion at all and her readers snap them up immediately. I think because it’s been a couple of years since I had anything new I might have lost my readership but we’ll see.
I’m not sure that blog tours make any difference – I certainly don’t visit any blogs although I do write my own once a month. I’m hoping that having so many Regency titles still available on Amazon will be enough for my new books to gain traction.
If anyone has any suggestions about the best way to promote them I’d really love to hear them.
Thank you for visiting my website and reading my blogs all year. I hope you have a happy holiday and that the New Year brings you everything you wish for.
