Don’t Mention Religion or Politics!

Posted on 5th November, 2024

There’s a belief that you should never talk about religion or politics with people you don’t know as these are always contentious subjects. Politics, nowadays, especially so. As a writer I have to be careful not to offend any of my readers who have different views from me but today I feel strongly enough about what’s going on to make my political and religious views public. I’m a lifelong Labour supporter and proud to be so. This government is not perfect, but is moving in the right direction and I hope the country will give them time to implement their changes before making up their minds. We had fourteen years of misrule by the Tory party – I think the Labour government need more than fourteen weeks to be judged.
Today is election day in America – you might say that an election in another country is nothing to do with me – but if Trump becomes president for a second time then it’s everything to do with the rest of the world. He will cut off support for the Ukraine, cosy up to Putin as before, and that will be a disaster for the entire world not just for Ukraine. I can’t understand how 48% of the American population support him – don’t they listen to his speeches which are rambling, incomprehensible and made up as he goes along. He’s still talking about immigrants eating cats – which is absolute nonsense – and said in his last speech that he didn’t mind if the news reporters were shot as long as he wasn’t! I would have thought that every woman in the country would find the abolition of Wade v Rowe alarming – but apparently not.
I’m an agnostic but I used to be a churchgoer and try to live my life by Christ’s teachings. He didn’t preach hate but love – this is something the evangelical supporters of Trump appear to have forgotten. Blaming immigrants and people that hold different views from you for the fact that you might be suffering financial hardship makes no sense to me.
What do you think? Should we be honest about our own beliefs even if we might offend some people or keep our opinions to ourselves?
I have many friends who don’t share the same religious views or politics as me but they are still very good friends. We just avoid talking about subjects we know we disagree about.
Fortunately, animals don’t care about your political or religious views they just want to be loved and taken care of. Don’t we all!
Until next month
best wishes
