Not my government!

Posted on 3rd October, 2022

I try not to be political as if you express an opinion on politics or religion it’s bound to upset somebody. However, as a centre-left voter I feel I have to nail my flag to the mast and speak out about the shambles caused by the appalling duo now in charge of our country.

Liz Truss doesn’t hold a mandate – Boris Johnson, however much I disagreed with his opinions and arrogant and shambolic way of governing, did. Only 1/3 of the Conservative MPs supported her bid to become prime minister and then she won the vote from the Conservative party members (only a hundred and sixty thousand of them when there are sixty-five million people in this country) by a slim majority.

They have plunged this country into a spiral from which I doubt the UK will recover without serious damage. The cost of living crisis, cost of energy, lack of support for those who need it most, crumbling NHS, underpaid and overworked teachers is not just because of the war in Ukraine – although admittedly that didn’t help – it’s because after thirteen years of Tory rule and the last three years of extreme right-wing policies that support the rich and push those less well off into poverty.

If there was a general election tomorrow the Conservatives would be wiped out – Labour would have over four hundred seats – this is why although the majority of Tory MPs are as horrified as I am  about the direction of Prime Minister and her Chancellor are taking the country – they won’t vote to have Parliament dissolved because it will mean they will lose their seats. I fear people are going to take to the streets – not just peacefully – by the end of this winter.

Brexit is proving to be the disaster many politicians feared it would be and I don’t see any reasonable solution to the problems. Climate change – which many in power all over the world denied – is causing chaos everywhere and I can’t see how this can be reversed.

On this cheerful note I shall bid you goodbye for this month and pray that next month there will be something more optimistic to blog about.

Loki couldn’t give a cardboard box about any of it.
